The Local Building Materials Initiative, and the Benefits of Using Locally Produced Building Materials

    Wednesday, June 12, 2013
    7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
    Ithaca College
    Park School of Business
    2nd Floor, Room 203
    Ithaca, NY

There are many benefits to buying local, as touted by the local foods movement. But what about building materials? Many of the benefits are the same - including reduced effects of transportation (e.g., emissions and fuel use, infrastructure impacts), benefits to the local economy, and the benefits of having a relationship with your manufacturer. LEED recognizes these with points for materials sourced from within a very generous 500-mile radius. The LBMI is a program developed by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County and the Ithaca Green Building Alliance to increase the awareness of these benefits in the community and work with both producers and consumers to increase the use of building materials already produced within 100 miles of Ithaca and, ultimately, increase the variety of materials produced within this area.

    Learning Objectives:
    • Learn about the carbon cost of transporting building materials.
    • Learn the benefits to the local economy of locally produced building materials.
    • Learn how locally produced building materials fit into LEED buildings.
    • Learn about some of the building materials being produced within 100 miles of Ithaca.

    About the Presenter:

    Guillermo Metz

Guillermo Metz is the Green Building and Renewable Energy Program Coordinator for Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County. He developed the Local Building Materials Initiative in association with the Ithaca Green Building Alliance, where he coordinates the annual Ithaca Area Green Buildings Open House, the Green Building Seminar Series, and other programs and events.

Mastering the Language of Talking to Elected Officials

“Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.” –Abraham Lincoln

Abe was on to something when we contemplate talking to elected officials about stormwater and watershed issues. It is not that we shouldn’t speak out, but we often are unsure of what words to use, how much detail to include, and how, exactly, to inspire action. Whether you are local, state, or federal government staff, representing a watershed or civic group, have a stormwater‐related business, or a concerned citizen, we know a few things to be true about communicating with elected officials: (1) their available time may be very short, (2) they have multiple other issues to deal with, and (3) they may not understand the issue. This webcast will specifically address the best ways to approach and communicate with elected officials, and will feature both noteworthy bloopers as well as success stories.

Rating Systems Compared: National Green Building Standard and LEED for Homes

    Presented by: Lauren Hildebrand

    Wednesday, June 19, 2013
    6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
    Gomen Kudasai
    232 Main Street
    New Paltz, NY

    Description:

It’s 2013: Do You Know Where Your Green Rating Systems Are?

Learn the history of two building rating systems: the National Green Building Standard and LEED for Homes. Understand the major differences between the two; how to adapt them to specific projects and how to address the challenges they present. Hear lessons learned and compare projected vs. actual energy consumption on recent multifamily case studies.

    Learning Objectives:

    • How They Came to Be - A brief introduction and history of the LEED for Homes program and National Green Building Standard.
    • A Comparison - Understand the major differences between the two green residential programs.
    • Program Updates - Learn what’s new for LEED for Homes 2012, LEED for Homes Multifamily Midrise and USGBC’s stance on MF height restrictions, the National Green Building Standard, EPA’s ENERGY STAR Label for Multifamily Highrise and NYSERDA incentives via the Multifamily Performance Program. Moderate rehab, gut rehab, and new construction options for green certification will be discussed.
    • Technical Updates - Learn which program requirements have presented the biggest challenges to projects pursuing a green building agenda, and the technologies that have best addressed those challenges. The duality between air sealing and ventilation is at the top of the list.
    • Results - Finally, we have post-occupancy data from certified green multifamily buildings in NYC and NYS. Learn what worked and what didn’t and, best of all, see how actual energy consumption over a full year compares to our predicted energy savings.

This course has been approved by the AIA for 1 LU/HSW.

    Description:

Porous Pavements are becoming a popular technique both to meet NYSDEC’s Stormwater Management Requirements, and take advantage of the Green Infrastructure movement. I will discuss what porous pavement is, what types of it are available in commerce, and how it is used as a stand-alone practice as well as a piece of a larger stormwater management plan. The opportunities and constraints of each material will be discussed, along with guidance on how to choose the appropriate pavement. Each pavement is also unique with regards to cost, qualifications of the installer, and maintenance. The design professional is typically responsible for the preliminary investigation of the existing conditions, and often providing the owner with a maintenance plan.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Describe 5 types of porous pavements.
    • Identify opportunities and constraints for each type of porous pavement.
    • Determine what to do with runoff once it is captured by porous pavement.
    • How porous pavements are maintained.

Combining Green & Grey in Combined Sewer Watersheds

“Life is like a sewer... what you get out of it depends on what you put into it.” – Tom Lehrer

Many communities with combined sanitary and stormwater sewers are exploring the best ways to reduce the incidence of combined sewer overflows (CSOs). There has been much made about the battle. . .or more often blending. . . of grey and green infrastructure components to achieve overall CSO reductions. Green infrastructure approaches show promise in that they can reduce stormwater runoff volumes (and associated pollutant loads) entering the combined system and can have multiple benefits, such as helping to “green” the city. Many CSO communities are asking the tough questions, such as how much can green infrastructure actually reduce overflows and how do costs compare to the grey alternatives? How can green infrastructure be incorporated into CSO Long Term Control Plans? This webcast will explore how various CSO communi ties are seeking to implement green solutions.

Stormwater Trading – Markets or Mayhem?

“When Donald Duck traded his wings for arms, was he trading up or trading down?” –Doug Coupland

Stormwater markets and/or pollutant trading programs are gaining currency (so to speak), at least as an idea of how to introduce some additional efficiency into TMDLs, state and local stormwater programs, and other watershed‐based efforts. The idea is quite simple and reflects basic market principles of supply and demand: the “owner” of a regulatory obligation (e.g., pollutant load reduction) trades with another entity who can supply the required reductions at lower cost or with greater efficiency. Some are looking to such programs as the salvation for meeting increasingly ambitious reduction goals. Others view such programs as “getting away with something” or sacrificing watershed health in one place for project implementation in another. Check out this webcast to learn how various trading programs are faring around the country and how the rules of the market can influence whether these trades constitute “markets or mayhem.”

Park School of Business, Room 203

    Ithaca, NY

Park in Visitor’s Parking Lot at 96B Main Entrance, walk to Park School of Business, 2nd Floor Rm 203

Following recommendations of USGBC, Ithaca College performed an Occupancy Survey of the Peggy Ryan Williams Center [PRWC] two years after occupancy. The PRWC is a LEED Platinum building that was occupied in 2009. This presentation will focus on the survey tool utilized; how the survey was customized to reduce biases; the major concerns identified through the survey and how IC resolved the major concerns expressed. Participant will see the actual survey results. Martha will also discuss how the building occupants developed a “Green Team” and the communication efforts they undertake to educate occupants.

    Learning Objectives:
    • Demonstrate how Survey Gizmo was utilized to develop a quick, comprehensive, analytical survey
    • How to word questions/customize a survey so responses aren’t biased.
    • Learn what issues can occur in a newly occupied building and how occupants perceptions of new technologies impact satisfaction
    • Understand the role that architects and engineers have in education building occupants and facilities personnel.

    About the Presenter:

Martha Gray has been the Director of Institutional Research at Ithaca College since 1996. Part of the Institutional Research Office’s role is to provide survey research services and support for the institution. Martha has extensive survey research experience in higher education and in private industry. She earned her bachelor’s degree at N.C. State University and her Masters in Communication at Ithaca College in 1998.

Stormwater Utilities: Reckoning the Cost Side of the Equation

“You'd be surprised how much it costs to look this cheap!” –Dolly Parton

Stormwater utilities continue to be one of the most promising means to build and sustain a local stormwater management program. Developing an effective stormwater utility demands an understanding of both the revenue and cost side of the equation. There are various, well‐understood methodologies for the revenue and rate‐settng side of the equation, but getting a good read on the actual costs of operating a program and implementing BMPs seems much more mysterious. With evolving BMP specifications and new innovative practices, developing reliable cost data can tricky, as cost data are notoriously unreliable, and variable. How can a program developing or modifying a stormwater utility do a better job of honing actual costs, both today and into the future? This webcast will provide resources and case studies on this topic, and we guarantee it will be worth the cost!
