What is a “green building”?  A building that employs a process in which as much information as possible is addressed early and with a clear goal of Triple Bottom Line success for the work.
This session includes presentation and workgroup-based examples focused on learning and affirming skills in leading early LEED charrette meetings.  A LEED Charrette meeting should not be a mere review of a checklist, as that will ingrain the “point for point’s sake” mentality and undermine the true benefits of whole building design.  Learn how to balance passionate inputs from participants and guide the process without limiting the involvement of the individuals. Our charrette goal: to achieve the best results for the project, including commitment and collaboration on the difficult or contentious aspects of the work.   Learn also how to plan the meeting to support this successful outcome.

About the Presenter:

Jodi Smits Anderson, AIA, LEED-AP BD+C, GPRO instructor in O+M
Director of Sustainability Programs, DASNY 

Jodi Smits Anderson is the Director of Sustainability Programs for the Dormitory Authority, State of New York.  She is an architect, LEED Accredited Professional in the Building Design + Construction specialty, AIA member, is the Chairman on the Board of the NY Upstate Chapter of the USGBC and serves as on the national board Chapter Steering Committee.   She is a graduate of RPI School of Architecture and has practiced architecture with many firms in the NYS Capital Region as a designer and as a construction administrator.  She has spoken throughout NY State on green building planning and construction, trained contractors, worked with a talented and knowledgeable committee on “Greening the Executive Mansion”, and has spoken at Greenbuild in 2009 and at a local TED conference in Albany in 2011. Her goal is to incorporate sustainable practices into as many elements of design, construction and living as possible, and to share whatever she has learned and learn still more from whomever will talk with her.

• Name 2-3 ways of encouraging constructive contributions from all participants
• Explain why adhering to the agenda is important
• List at least 5 reasons the use of charrettes is a valuable part of the high-performance design process
