Course No. LEED 251 - Strategies for Success: LEED & The Urban Heat Island Effect

Interested in furthering your understanding of the urban heat island effect and ways to reduce it?  This webinar is the first in our Strategies for Success in LEED series, designed to teach individuals about strategies useful in meeting LEED requirements in various credit categories.

 Learning Objectives:  
  • Understand the importance of the urban heat island (UHI) effect. 
  • Identify the LEED requirements related to reducing the UHI effect. 
  • Explore strategies useful in meeting LEED requirements related to urban heat.
  • Compare regional differences in strategies used to meet LEED requirements and mitigate UHI effects.

Credits: This session is approved for 1.5 hours of LEED Specific (BD+C and O+M) GBCI hours as well as 1.5 AIA/CES LU/HSW/SD hours.

Presenters:
Gina Bocra is the Director of Sustainable Design for Burt Hill. She became involved with the development of LEED CI in 1999, after the primary organizers produced the first draft. Gina's early involvement with LEED CI prompted continued volunteer efforts with USGBC and the development of LEED NC 2.1. She has participated as a member of the Sustainable Sites Technical Advisory Group since the LEED Wingspread charrette in 2001. She is also one of the authors of the recently updated LEED NC Accreditation Exam and new LEED CI Accreditation Exam.

Joby Carlson is the research engineer and laboratory manager for the Center on SMART (Sustainable Materials and Renewable Technology) Innovations. Joby holds a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering. As a graduate student Carlson worked under Dr. Jay Golden of the School of Sustainability (GIOS) and Dr. Kamil Kaloush of Civil Engineering in the field of Urban Heat Island mitigation. Upon graduation, Carlson was hired full time by GIOS to continue research and guide undergraduate and graduate research for the center. Carlson is a registered Engineer in Training in Arizona and a LEED Accredited Professional.
