Course No. BD+C 254: LEED 2009 for Healthcare: An Introduction to the Rating System

This session will launch with the story of LEED 2009 for Healthcare, including a brief history on the development alongside the Green Guide for Healthcare (GGHC) and the unique challenges that the rating system addresses distinct from LEED for New Construction.


The Webinar Series is hosted by the NY Chapter of the USGBC and cohosted by The Albany Pine Bush Preservation Discovery Center.


Steve Guttmann, Guttmann & Blaevoet

Steve Guttmann is a mechanical engineer and principal at Guttmann & Blaevoet, with over 25 years of hospital and healthcare design experience. Steve’s contributions to the healthcare industry go beyond his extensive design expertise: he served as Chair for the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Healthcare Core Committee from 2008-2010 and has been actively involved in developing LEED for Healthcare for the past seven years. He has also served on the Steering Committee of Green Guide for Health Care, for which he wrote the Energy Optimization credit and is currently leading the Carbon/Energy Task Group as co-chair.

Gail Vittori, Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems

Gail Vittori is Co-Director of the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems, a non-profit sustainable planning and design firm established in 1975 engaged with strategic development, design, policy, education and research initiatives. She was the 2009 Chair of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Board of Directors, served on the USGBC Board from 2002-2010 and was Founding Chair of the LEED for Healthcare committee. Gail is currently on the Green Building Certification Institute Board of Directors, and is Convener and a Co-Coordinator of the Green Guide for Health Care.

  • Articulate the unique issues for applying green building to Healthcare
  • Describe the background for the development of the LEED for Healthcare Rating System
  • Distinguish between LEED NC and LEED for Healthcare
  • Understand pilot credits relevant to LEED for Healthcare
