Time to register for the New York Upstate Chapter of the USGBC's presentation on Achieving Cost Savings and Renewable Energy Goals in Commercial-Scale Buildings with High-Efficiency, Wood Pellet and Wood Chip Boiler Systems.

Until recently, wood (biomass) heating had largely been limited to installations in residential homes and large industrial sites linked to the forest industry.  However, over the last 10 years, several European and a few U.S. manufacturers have focused on developing high-efficiency clean burning wood boiler systems targeted at replacing fossil fuel heating in commercial-scale buildings.   These systems are recently gaining commercial success and now over 1/3 of the students in Vermont attend schools heated with wood.  The interest in wood heat is largely driven by economics since wood fuel typically costs 40%-80% cheaper than heating oil or propane. However, biomass heating is also starting to receive support and encouraged from Federal guidelines and policies such as Executive Order 13423 which mandates 25% of energy use in Federal buildings to come from renewable sources by 2025.   As a renewable energy source, biomass heat has an advantage over solar or wind resources because it is available on demand and has the flexibility to be integrated into a variety of building types and locations.


This presentation is targeted at architects and engineers and will provide participants with a fundamental understanding of the features of successful biomass heating projects for commercial-scale buildings.  The topics covered will include:  Key features and limitations of biomass as a renewable fuel; features of advanced biomass boilers; basic system design considerations (system sizing and integration with other HVAC components) and key steps to managing a successful biomass heating project. 

About the Presenter - David Dungate, M. Engineer, President - ACT Bioenergy, LLC: 

David Dungate is the Founder and President of ACT Bioenergy, a Schenectady, NY -based manufacturer of high-efficiency, commercial-scale, wood pellet and wood chip boilers.  ACT Boilers have been installed at locations throughout the U.S. including:  U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army, Clarkson University, Cornell University and various public buildings including schools, hospitals and municipal buildings.  David also serves as a director of both the New York Biomass Energy Alliance and of the Biomass Thermal Energy Council, where he is also a co-chair of the Technical Advisory Committee.
