This presentation will highlight the sustainable attributes of concrete masonry products. The presentation will identify credits in LEED® 2009 where masonry products can potentially contribute towards the required point total for certification. 
Participants will learn about concrete masonry’s role in improving indoor air quality with respect towards resistance to mold growth, and elimination of volatile organic compounds for the life of the building. The audience will also better understand masonry’s contribution towards fire safety, improved acoustics, energy efficiency, and safety and security in public buildings.

  • Gain knowledge of several changes in LEED® 2009 vs. 2.2

 This program is registered with AIACES; attendees will earn 1 LU/HSW Hour. It is also approved by USGBC for 1 GBCI CE Hour

About the Presenter:
Nicholas F. Carparelli is the Executive Director of the NYS Concrete Masonry Association (NYSCMA) and a LEED Green Associate. Since his appointment to this position in 2003, Nick has been responsible for facilitating the development and implementation of programs intended to assist design professionals with the use of concrete masonry in various construction applications throughout New York State.  He also currently serves on a the board of directors of the USGBC NY Upstate Chapter, the advisory board of ACI Central NY Chapter, and the technical subcommittee for review 2013 NYS Residential Building Code. Nick also volunteers his time as a member of the board of trustees for the Landmarks Society of Greater Utica. Nick is a life-long resident of the Mohawk Valley, and has been married to his wife Carol for 37 years. 
Prior to assuming the directorship at the NYSCMA, Nick served as Director of Paving Services for Central NY for the American Concrete Pavement Association, Northeast Chapter.  Nick has been involved in the construction and building products industry for his entire career, beginning with his family’s block, ready-mix and building supply business in 1971. Over several years with the family business, Nick gained first-hand experience in the manufacturing of concrete masonry units and the production of ready-mix concrete, as well as an overall knowledge of several other cement-related building materials.
