Built on materials developed directly by USGBC LEED development staff, the focus of this training and the discussion will be on the affects this LEED system update will have on the green building industry and on the projects with which we are involved. What new skills are needed and what resources are available?  How do we manage the changes in the system and in the market in a way to reduce effort and expense? What new terms, tools and goals are in this rendition of LEED?  What opportunities exist in the new LEED Rating System that can help your business excel?

    About the Presenter:

Roxanne Button Kujawa, Principal and Owner of Design Synergies

Design Synergies was founded by Buffalo-based Canadian architect Roxanne Button, a licensed architect (New York) and LEED-Accredited Professional (BD+C, Homes) who has been an advocate and practitioner of sustainable design for more than 22 years.  Her diverse background includes green building consulting, scriptwriting for a green renovation TV series, and designing and managing LEED projects.  Roxanne started Design Synergies to change the conversation about sustainability, architecture and "green" design.  It isn't a specialty, an additional service, or an after-thought.  Sustainability should be a core value for every architectural firm, an integrated and conscious part of every project from the beginning.

Barbie Food, GHG and our Food System

    Presented by Donna Williams

    5:30 pm to 7:00 pm
    Presentation starts promptly at 6:00

    Business Building*

    Description:

Our food system with its reliance on manufactured produce and highly processed foods is an out-growth of the American consumers demand for a wide and consistent variety of inexpensive, visually perfect, instantly consumable food. This food has no greater relationship to real food than the Barbie doll has to a real woman.  This food requires a manufacturing orientation that requires chemicals and processes that ensure product consistency, supply reliability and maximized shelf life. The structure, economics and business model of the American Food production industry has more in common with the toy industry than the agriculture industry.  The culprit behind this is the consumer.  We find it more convenient to place blame on the “industrial food industry”, “big Ag” and players such as Monsanto than to take ownership of our own role.  The sad fact Is that independently the collective consumer behavior will not change without a radical change in the way food is purchased and distributed.  The solution is one that eliminates visual selection, incorporates preparation education, focuses on the reduction of waste from field to table, emphasizes collective variety over individual impulse, and maximizes distribution efficiencies.

    Learning Objectives:

After this session, attendees will be able to:

    • Be able to describe our current food system
    • Cite three important elements of our small farming in our region
    • List three ways the Field Goods model is able to change consumer eating behavior and support small farming in our region
    • Identify the role waste throughout the food distribution system plays in GHG emissions

    About the Presenter:

Donna Williams is the Founder of Field Goods, LLC (based in Athens, NY). Donna started Field Goods after she completed agriculture economic development consulting work for the Greene County, NY Industrial Development Agency. Field Goods was an inevitable outgrowth of this work, her belief in the positive power of local food and small business, and her new venture experience in consumer health, e-commerce, and the natural food industry.  Field Goods is a subscription-based local food delivery service that provides its customer a weekly delivery of pre-selected produce purchased from small farms.  The service is primarily marketed as a wellness program to help employers support employee health and commitment to environmental responsibility.  Field Goods currently purchases from over 80 small farms and delivers to customers from Saratoga to Westchester.  Donna earned her MBA from Columbia Business School and BA in Economics from Mount Holyoke College.

    About the Presenter:

I grew up in wood-canvas canoes and Adirondack Guideboats. After college, majoring in physics, my wife and I joined the Peace Corps to teach math, physics and a little chemistry at 6th form level in Ghana, West Africa. We returned to graduate school to learn a little more physics. I got a Ph.D. my wife got a Masters and two children. The 70’s oil crisis made me realize solar energy is our only sustainable energy source. I’ve worked mainly in solar concentrator system research, lived in a passive solar house 33 years and taught solar energy engineering at RPI for 31 years. Neither solar cars nor solar airplanes are “practical”. Solar electric boats can be. Solar Sal is my fourth. The performance data is awesome.
