    Description:

LEED v4 is ramping up our attention to and integration of sustainability on the built environment. This session will review the newest rendition of the rating tool, focusing on new credits, new terminology and new resources. By "In the Trenches" we mean we will be discussing how this will affect YOUR work: what skills will you need to develop, how this will affect costs and how they can be mitigated, where  you might experience frustration in asking the market to meet these needs, etc.

LEED v4 “In the Trenches” presents the most recent changes to the LEED rating system. Built on materials developed directly by USGBC LEED development staff, the focus of this training and the discussion will be on the affects this LEED system update will have on the green building industry and on the projects with which we are involved. What new skills are needed and what resources are available?  How do we manage the changes in the system and in the market in a way to reduce effort and expense? What new terms, tools and goals are in this rendition of LEED?  What opportunities exist in the new LEED Rating System that can help your business excel?

    Learning Objectives:

    • Define BUG ratings, LID, EPD, HPD and BeCx
    • List at least three of the several new credits or prerequisites in the LEED v4 Rating System
    • Relate approaches to Integrative Design and the related documentation that will benefit your project outcomes
    • Be able to find and navigate the LEED rating system, find applicable forms, and access LEEDuser on the USGBC website

This course has been approved for 2.5 AIA LU/HSW.

    • Tuesday, August 12, 2014

Please join us for our August Sustainable Speakers Series presentation:

Faith Communities – Wise Reduction Approaches for Energy Costs and Carbon

Presented by Jim Hundt and Ed Smyth

     Tuesday, August 12, 2014
    5:30 pm to 7:00 pm
    Presentation starts promptly at 6:00
    SUNY Albany
    Room 003
    Business Building*
    Albany, NY
    Light refreshments will be provided.

    Description:

There are common motivations among faith communities to reduce energy use for improving costs and supporting creation stewardship.  Buildings owned and managed by faith communities can have unique characteristics different from other commercial buildings; age, hours and length of time that the building is occupied, end-uses that drive energy use, and funding sources for improvements.

A dollar not paid to a utility is just as valuable as a dollar in a collection plate, dollar of endowment interest, or funds raised from a capital campaign, so converting potential energy dollars into core mission use is vital to faith communities.  In addition, energy efficiency is part of good stewardship of resources, and can help to protect the environment.  This informative, one-hour session will guide you through the core sources of energy use by faith communities, a practical three-step approach towards assessing and tackling those energy uses, and how energy reduction is a wise investment compared to any other returns in an endowment fund.  Learn also about sources of support from NYSERDA and faith-based organizations.

    Learning Objectives:

After this session, attendees will be able to:

    • Name at least three unique key features of most congregation buildings (i.e. churches, temples, synagogues, and similar) that determine how energy is used
    • List elements of a pragmatic approach to assessing and prioritizing energy and carbon reduction emission goals
    • Identify some basic financial principles for making these assessments
    • Leave with 3-5 specific sources of knowledge and support from NYSERDA and faith-based organizations

This course has been approved for 1 AIA LU/HSW.

Register via the link to the left.  You will need to log-in with your email address and create a profile if you have not already done so.  You must use the email address associated with your Chapter membership account in order to receive the member's rate for registration.  Advance registration fees: $15 for Chapter members and $20 for the general public. $10 for students. SUNY Albany students and staff are free (PLEASE REGISTER FOR ROOM PLANNING). At the door: $25, cash or check.
