    About the Presenter:

Sue “Coz” Cosentini is a native Ithacan, with over twenty-five years in the construction trades, working in association with various design professionals, and pursuing a variety of sustainable design and construction initiatives

A carpenter and general contractor of 30 years, and passionate about the environment and playing outside for longer than that; Susan Cosentini launched New Earth Living in 2009, turning a vacant lot next to her home into a 4 unit small urban eco-village. Forming the pilot community for a new type of land development.

New Earth Living LLC is a community oriented development company that has brought together the best practices of sustainability, co-housing, and in-fill development to create a replicable urban real estate development model called The Pocket Neighborhood. The Pocket Neighborhood focuses on core issues  which must be addressed in the creation of a sustainable future. Among them are the needs for the preservation of arable land and natural spaces, energy independence, local food production, intentional water conservation, and to fulfill a social need to be connected and supported, in a meaningful, engaging environment. The structures are built using the German Passivhaus technology using a proprietary building assembly to achieve ultra-energy efficiency, with a goal of carbon neutrality.

Building Structures as if Carbon Emissions Mattered

    Presented by: Jim D'Aloisio

      7:30 am to 9:00 am
Presentation begins promptly at 8:00 am

      5710 Commons Park Drive
    East Syracuse, NY 13057-9581
      Conference Room
Coffee and juice will be provided.

    Description:

Yes, they matter. But we all act as if they don’t.

Traditional U.S. building's structural systems are time-tested and reliable, but all have drawbacks, regarding their environmental impact. One seldom-considered aspect is the Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (CO2e) emissions generated by their use. We will review the CO2e emissions of steel, concrete, masonry, and wood construction, and see how to reduce the emissions in practical ways, and what materials to avoid completely. Many designers believe that the carbon emissions of buildings over time due to energy usage dwarfs the initial carbon emissions of construction. This is not really the case. It varies with construction type, envelope performance, energy type, and service life of the building. There is a methodology to determine heating energy usage for a building system, based on R-value, air-tightness, and local climate conditions. We will review this method, and then compare CO2e emissions from construction to annual emissions due to heating energy, for various wall systems. Finally, some alternative structural systems have significant benefits, including the potential for reducing CO2e emissions in their construction and operation. These include: insulated concrete forms, structural insulated panels, straw bale construction, and cross-laminated timber. For each, we will briefly review some aspects of their usage as well as their CO2e emissions.

    Learning Objectives:

    • Calculate the CO2e emissions of various types of structural systems.
    • Contrast the CO2e emitted during the construction of a building structure to the annual emissions due to heating and cooling.
    • Recognize building materials that represent high CO2e emissions.
    • Examine ways to reduce CO2e emissions from the construction of concrete and steel structures.
    • Describe some aspects of alternative structural systems such as Insulated Concrete Forms, Structural Insulated Panels, Straw Bale Construction, and Cross-Laminated Timber structures.

This course has been approved for 1 AIA LU/HSW.

    Description:

LEED v4 is ramping up our attention to and integration of sustainability on the built environment. This session will review the newest rendition of the rating tool, focusing on new credits, new terminology and new resources. By "In the Trenches" we mean we will be discussing how this will affect YOUR work: what skills will you need to develop, how this will affect costs and how they can be mitigated, where  you might experience frustration in asking the market to meet these needs, etc.

LEED v4 “In the Trenches” presents the most recent changes to the LEED rating system. Built on materials developed directly by USGBC LEED development staff, the focus of this training and the discussion will be on the affects this LEED system update will have on the green building industry and on the projects with which we are involved. What new skills are needed and what resources are available?  How do we manage the changes in the system and in the market in a way to reduce effort and expense? What new terms, tools and goals are in this rendition of LEED?  What opportunities exist in the new LEED Rating System that can help your business excel?

    Learning Objectives:

    • Define BUG ratings, LID, EPD, HPD and BeCx
    • List at least three of the several new credits or prerequisites in the LEED v4 Rating System
    • Relate approaches to Integrative Design and the related documentation that will benefit your project outcomes
    • Be able to find and navigate the LEED rating system, find applicable forms, and access LEEDuser on the USGBC website

    About the Presenter:

Sam Harrington - Ecovative, Mushroom Insulation Manager

Sam Harrington joined Ecovative when the company was just a few people in a basement with a wild idea to revolutionize the way materials are made. He's helped develop the automated bio-manufacturing system that harnesses living fungi to turn agricultural crop wastes into protective packaging. Sam has conducted Life Cycle Assessments of the production system to inform engineering decisions and minimize Ecovative's environmental footprint. Sam has worked with numerous Fortune 500 customers to develop award winning sustainable packaging and product solutions utilizing Mushroom Materials. Sam received a dual B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and Product Design from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
